Ford Unveils Universal EV Platform with $30,000 Pickup, Targeting Mass-Market Adoption
Ford Motor Company is making a bold move into the electric vehicle (EV) space with its new "Universal EV Platform," designed to support multiple vehicle types. The first model to debut on this platform will be a mid-sized pickup truck priced around $30,000, aimed at bringing advanced self-driving technology to everyday consumers. Slated for a 2028 release, this strategy positions Ford to compete directly with Tesla, General Motors, and Rivian in the autonomous vehicle market.
Doug Field, Ford's chief officer for EV, design, and digital technology, emphasized the company's focus on accessibility. "It's part of a broader technology strategy: putting our best and newest innovations where the volume is and where accessibility matters most," Field told CNBC. The platform will feature an "eyes-off" driving system, powered by in-house software and an AI assistant, marking a significant step toward autonomous driving.
Meanwhile, GM is also advancing its autonomous tech, with plans to debut AI features in the luxury Cadillac Escalade IQ, priced at $127,000 or more. Ford's approach, however, prioritizes mass-market adoption over luxury, signaling a potential shift in how autonomous technology reaches consumers.
